Saturn’s Hexagon

This is a view of Saturn’s north polar region, taken by Cassini’s Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) on February 26, 2013. You can see the rings in the top of this image as well as its mysterious hexagon. — Val Klavans

That’s crazy. Learn something new every day!

Circumcision

All kinds of people upset about it in one form or another. These are my findings solely based on tumblr. Gonna put the read more in here, so I don’t bother those that aren’t interested.

I don’t know why this makes me so angry

You can’t just scale shit down to make it seem worse, that’s not how things work.

My great grandma was 100 years old

scaling that down to 1 hour

she started smoking when she 5 minutes old

and died 55 minutes later

Don’t smoke, you will only live an hour.

Also, in the scaled down world the forests would only be here for a couple ours more than us, ice caps/glaciers would be in the same boat… and in some cases would be around for less hours. I’m not denying the influence human kind has had on the planet, but this big blue ball in space has been doing crazy things to itself for years(millions of real years). Just check out the history of the Amazon. At one point it stretched to nearly the tip of SA, and at another it was nearly all contained to the very northern bits of SA and Central America… all before humans did anything.

Forbes:

Believe it or not, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) graded eggs would be illegal if sold the UK, or indeed anywhere in the European Union (EU). It’s all to do with the fact that commercial American eggs are federally required to be washed and sanitized before they reach the consumer. EU egg marketing laws, on the other hand, state that Class A eggs – those found on supermarkets shelves, must not be washed, or cleaned in any way.

“In Europe, the understanding is that this mandate actually encourages good husbandry on farms. It’s in the farmers’ best interests then to produce to cleanest eggs possible, as no one is going to buy their eggs if they’re dirty, ” explained Mark Williams, Chief Executive, British Egg Industry Council in a phone interview.

American eggs would be illegal to sell in a British supermarket because they are washed and British eggs would be illegal to sell in a US supermarket because they are unwashed.

I like the EU’s concept, but I think I’d still want them washed. Not that a washed egg is pure, but it’s like anything else that comes out of a womb. It’s always better to get the gook off quickly!

p.s. Do chickens have wombs, or is it considered something different since it’s not actually giving birth… it’s laying an egg.

Local TV News Channel is Clearly Lobbying for Unhealthy Meals →

I wonder which lobbyist KFVS 12 is connected with. The story is completely one sided. They even go as far to say that by 2014 that they will be cutting out all of the sodium in the diet. Why would that say this? It’s a scare tactic to seem like the Big Liberal Government has gone too far.

Here is the USDA plan for the next decade. It mentions reductions, but nothing about removing all of the salt. It is a vital nutrient to our well being after all. It just needs to be consumed in moderation.

I get it that the national news sources obviously side one way or another, but it’s a shame to see obvious corruption on the local level.

Today

My uncle had open heart surgery, and the double bypass is went smoothly!

I forgot that this was going on today, so I had to cancel a project. That was kind of lame, oops. That being said, super glad that everything went so well for his surgery!

To decrease the birth rate would require a big decrease in sexual activity. Here are the numbers: Researchers followed 881 couples through 7,017 menstrual cycles, with two stipulations for the volunteers: sex just once per month and no birth control of any sort. They found that on days outside the fertile window, conception occurred about 5 percent of the time, while during the fertile time around ovulation, the rate was 25 percent. Call the overall rate about 10 percent per unprotected intercourse. But protection with condoms or the pill or whatever brings the number way down—let’s say that rather than 10 percent, the rate with protection is 1 percent. That means to prevent one pregnancy an American would have to have sex 100 times less per year, just about a year’s worth of activity.

Are we having less sex? What’s behind the drop in the U.S. birth rate!? (via newsweek)

I love the amount of “let’s say” instead of actual numbers. Makes your point plausible. The pill/condom used properly are less than 1%, and if used together I’m sure there is a chance that a baby is made… but it’s gonna be something crazy low.

There is the argument that people don’t use them properly sometimes… which is sad and true. If you can’t figure out how to use either or both then maybe we need to have some optional eugenics… Come on folks!

I remember watching this episode, and bringing this up in some science class later on!
